Kigali is proof that a city can carry the
weight of history and still shine with
hope and purpose.

AMEC 2024 Kigali:
Building Tomorrow’s Leaders in the Heart of Rwanda
From May 22 to 25, 2024, youth leaders from across Africa and the Middle East gathered in
Kigali, Rwanda for the JCI Africa and Middle East Conference (AMEC) 2024. Held under
the inspiring theme “BUILDING TOMORROW’S LEADERS,” the conference provided a
dynamic platform for leadership training, networking, cultural exchange, and strategic
planning — all aimed at empowering the next generation of changemakers.

A Gathering of Purpose
Organized by Junior Chamber International (JCI), AMEC 2024 served as a cornerstone event
in the organization’s calendar, reinforcing its mission to develop young people into active
citizens who create positive change in their communities. The conference was held at premier
venues in Kigali, including the iconic Kigali Convention Centre, and brought together
delegates from across the Africa and Middle East region.

The event featured a wide range of activities, including:
• Leadership development workshops and JCI official courses
• Public speaking and communication training
• Project management and community impact planning sessions
• Engaging networking events and cultural exchanges
Each session was designed to equip participants with practical skills while reinforcing the
values of collaboration, innovation, and service.

Kigali: A City of Progress and Possibility
Hosting AMEC in Kigali was symbolic and strategic. The Rwandan capital is often hailed as
one of Africa’s cleanest, safest, and most organized cities, thanks to its strong commitment to
sustainability and community engagement. Set amidst rolling green hills, Kigali blends
modern infrastructure with traditional values, offering visitors a glimpse of Rwanda’s
impressive transformation.

Rwanda: A Story of Resilience and Renewal
Rwanda’s journey is one of resilience and renewal. Following the tragic events of the 1994
genocide against the Tutsi, the country has made remarkable strides in peacebuilding,
governance, and sustainable development. Today, Rwanda stands as a model for unity,
innovation, and inclusive growth in Africa. Hosting AMEC 2024 in Kigali allowed
participants to witness firsthand how leadership and collective effort can rebuild a nation and
inspire the continent.

Embracing Culture Through Umuganda
Beyond formal training sessions, AMEC 2024 also integrated an essential element of
Rwandan culture — Umuganda. This monthly national day of community service, held on
the last Saturday of each month, involves citizens coming together to clean, repair, or build
within their communities.
AMEC participants joined local residents in Umuganda activities, offering a hands-on
experience of Rwanda’s community-driven development model. This cultural exchange
underscored the importance of service and solidarity — values that resonate deeply with the
JCI ethos.

Rwanda Night: A Celebration of Heritage
One of the highlights of the conference was Rwanda Night — an evening dedicated to
showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage. Participants had the opportunity to taste
traditional Rwandan dishes, such as ugali, isombe, brochettes, and ibihaza (pumpkin in
peanut sauce), experiencing firsthand the flavors of Rwanda’s culinary traditions.
The night also featured traditional Rwandan dance performances, which were both visually
stunning and deeply meaningful. In Rwandan culture, dance is an important form of
storytelling and identity.

What made the performance especially impressive was the distinct
styles of dance for men and women:
• Men’s dances often involve powerful, energetic movements that symbolize strength,
bravery, and warrior spirit.
• Women’s dances are typically graceful and expressive, reflecting beauty, elegance,
and the nurturing role of women in society.
These performances, accompanied by traditional drumming and singing, captivated the
audience and gave participants a deeper appreciation of Rwanda’s proud cultural legacy.

A Seamless and Impactful Experience
AMEC 2024 was not only content-rich but also professionally organized, with smooth
logistics, warm hospitality, and a thoughtful program that balanced learning, inspiration, and
cultural immersion. The event’s success reflected the dedication of both the JCI Rwanda
organizing committee and the Rwandan people, whose openness and efficiency left a
lasting impression on delegates.

Looking Ahead
As the conference concluded, participants returned to their home countries energized and equipped
with new skills, ideas, and connections. AMEC 2024 Kigali will be remembered not only for its
rich content and professional execution, but also for its cultural depth, human connection, and the
sense of shared purpose it cultivated. In a world that urgently needs ethical, visionary leadership, this
conference reaffirmed that the future is in capable hands — and that tomorrow’s leaders are
already building bridges today.
